Meets: Parents of new skaters wish to know when a skater is ready to race in a meet. Generally they are ready when they want to race. There are four categories of meets:
- Regional Meets are half day meets held for skaters aged 4 to 9. For this circuit, Ontario is broken into three regions. We are in the West region, so will race in any of the following cities: Milton, Oakville, Hamilton, Niagara, Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo, or London.
- Provincial Meets are one day normally, with two-day meets twice a year (mid season, final). Skaters in these meets will be aged 10-12, or aged 12-29 and not skating in the Elite circuit (below). The Provincial Meets will also host Special Olympics races. Ontario is broken into two Zones for this circuit. We are in the West zone, so will race in any of the following cities: Newmarket, Barrie, Brampton, Milton, Oakville, Hamilton, Niagara, Cambridge, Kitchener Waterloo, or London. Skaters will be grouped by ability and will race in mixed-gender events. Skaters aged 11-13 will also do relays. Skaters in these meets will require a standard set of equipment, including a speed skating helmet, goggles with head strap, cut-resistant gloves and kevlar ankle protectors. Times from the two-day Championship will be used to select skaters for Canada Youth Short Track.
- Elite Meets are two days long, and are skated Ontario-wide. There will be 3 meets plus two time trial events. Skaters must be aged 13-29, qualify based on times since August 2022, and will receive an invitation to the Elite circuit. Qualifying times will be taken from the SSO Ranking List. Skaters may accept or decline the invitation to skate in the Elite circuit. Skaters will be grouped by ability and gender. Skaters in these meets require full skating equipment including a cut-resistant undersuit.
- Master’s Skaters will be scheduled for racing events with the Provincial and/or Elite circuits. Senior skaters aged 19-29 may opt to skate with this group.
Technical Bulletins outlining competition rules can be found on the Speed Skating Ontario website. These are updated each season, and some meets have meet-specific rules.
